'Eco'-workshops and community space at Tombreck, Lawers, by Aberfeldy
The BIG SHED is a proposed new build industrial/commercial mixed use building. It will provide affordable workspaces for local micro businesses, social enterprises and community groups. Planning permission has been granted by Perth & Kinross Council, for a timber framed, timber clad building with a ‘footprint’ of 240 square metres, plus an additional 60 square metres of mezzanine office space, on a site at Tombreck Farm, Lawers. Possible micro businesses and users of the BIG SHED include a bakery (available for use by community groups) an accountants office, a market gardening company, an engineering and motor repair workshop, The Loch Tay Food Chain (a food link initiative involving local producers, restaurants, hotels and the public), an outside catering company, arts and cultural activities, environmental workshops and affordable studio workspace for visiting artists and others
WHAT WE PLAN TO DO Grant funding has already been offered from Perth and Kinross Council and the Climate Challenge Fund and we have been awarded a seventy-five per cent grant from the Big Lottery Fund for capital and development funds for constructing the BIG SHED as a community asset. The design brief for the BIG SHED is that it should be a flexible multi-purpose space, capable of being used by different people and groups at different times. The building will be an exemplar of eco-design with low carbon emissions and a reduced eco-footprint. Insulation levels will be higher than required by current building regulations, and the building will be heated totally from renewable sources. Where possible, the building materials will be local, of natural and renewable origin, chemical free, and with a percentage of reclaimed and recycled materials and components. We are hoping to source much of the construction timber from Bolfracks Estate, near Aberfeldy and Ardchyle in Glen Dochart. An area to the front of the BIG SHED will be levelled to provide a flat grassy area for games and events. WHO WE ARE Tombreck Action Group was set up in April 2003, by a group of local people and friends of Tombreck Farm as a voluntary constituted association; with the aim of creating a model of good practice in sustainable rural regeneration, incorporating land use, employment and housing on Tombreck Farm. Tombreck is in the parish of Lawers in Highland Perthshire, 15 miles from Aberfeldy and six miles from Killin. Loch Tayside Community Interest Company is an off-shoot of the Tombreck Action Group, and has the specific remit to build the BIG SHED as a community owned and managed workspace. We are currently expanding our membership in order that we can truly reflect the local community's wishes and are looking for individuals from the Killin, Lawers, Fearnan and Kenmore area who will assist in developing the BIG SHED for the local community.
Membership of the Loch Tayside Community Interest Company is open to anyone 12 years of age or over who agree with our objectives. Ordinary Members must be registered electors in the community council areas of Killin & District, Loch Tay & Glen Lyon or Kenmore & District. Associate Members are those people 18 years of age or older who cannot be Ordinary Members. Junior Members are those people between the ages of 12 years and 17 years of age.
